This is a 2-part post answering one question: how can I feel enthusiastic about change? For part 1 click here.
Yesterday, I told you that I was experiencing change and uncertainty, in my life.
Lots of fun, weekly events, which I used to attend, are on pause. It’s also a time of feeling stripped back financially. I’m stepping into the unknown… but I am not singing and dancing about it!
I know that I am not the only one who feels like this. So, today, I am continuing to list a few thoughts on how to cope with all this unexpected, stripped-back change.
Be Aware of Your Need for Significance
There is a man in the bible called David. He became a King and, more importantly, David is known, throughout history, as a man after God’s own heart.
Yet, this man spent a lot of time unseen!
In his younger years, David went seemingly un-noticed by his family. One day, he ends up on a battle field with King Saul. (He was sent by his father only to check up on his brothers!) But, what happens, is incredible. David offers to fight the enemy. David speaks to King Saul:
“Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock,I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it.Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God.The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.”
Samuel 17: 34 – 37, NIV.
Of course, David kills the enemy – otherwise known as Goliath.
But, here is the thing: David would not have had courage to fight Goliath, if he hadn’t spent time with God, in the dark. David knew that the Lord who rescued Him from lions and bears when no-one was looking, would also rescue him in front of a watchful King Saul.
You might not want to fight with lions and bears! I doubt that David wanted to wrestle lions and bears. But that season prepared David for his destiny; to fight Goliath.
What I am saying is: that season was of great significance.
We live in an Instagram world! I only have to scroll for 10-minutes to see countless people living their mountain-top moments…
People having babies, people getting married, people eating fancy food, people meeting friends, people climbing the career ladder, people releasing books and online courses, people growing businesses and people traveling the world!
I don’t know about you… but it often makes me question the significance of my own life. And I think this is something you and I need to be honest about.
We have a real need for significance. We look for it a lot. And I think looking for significance is O.K.
But we must learn to look to God, instead of Instagram.
God says you are always significant.
The bible reads:
You can buy two sparrows for only a copper coin, yet not even one sparrow falls from its nest without the knowledge of your Father. Aren’t you worth much more to God than many sparrows?
Matthew 10:29, TPT.
Not only are YOU significant to God, your life is also of great significance to Him. Whether you are having a mountain-top moment, or washing the dishes for the 10th time today – it all matters, in His eyes. He doesn’t miss a thing.
The fact is: you don’t know what this season of change will lead to.
When David was in the field battling lions and bears…
- Did he imagine he would end up killing Goliath?
- Did he imagine that he would be a great leader, a King and a man after God’s own heart?
- Did he ever think he would be known throughout history for taking his place in the lineage of Christ?
You may feel flat, de-motivated, with the wind taken out of your sails. But God is not finished with you yet, friend! In fact, He is doing something significant in your life right now. You matter and the season you are in matters.
Action Point: read David and Goliath in 1 Samuel 17. Do you believe that the season you are currently in is significant to God?
Look for Blessing in the Process
Years from now, I will look back at this time of no routine, low cash, days with my daughter, finding free playparks, socially-distancing from others… I will probably miss these days. I might want to be less visible to the world – to hideout in our family home, with no fixed agenda.
When you feel fed up and confused about life, you can easily miss out on God’s daily blessings. Then, before you know it, you’ve stepped into another new season, without ever fully enjoying the last.
It is important to be expectant for God to do lovely things, no matter what change you are going through.
For instance, in my current circumstance, I might think: “I can’t afford that” but God says: “I am provider.”
I might think: “I don’t have a plan for today” but God says: “I can plan better than you ever could!”
In order to be aware of everyday blessing, be real with God and process what’s happening with Him.
Sure, life has changed for you. Maybe you’ve lost a job or maybe you are sick. I don’t know. But, what I do know is that God is reaching out to you, right now. Even if it’s an uncomfortable, refining season, He gives little moments of light relief because He just loves us so much. We are His babies! He can’t resist.
He will do something great and He is doing something great. It is neither one, nor the other.
So, today, look for any blessings and delight as He gives generously.
Be thankful for friends and family. Be amazed as He provides financially. Be drawn into conversation with Him, on a daily basis.
Action Point: keeping a gratitude journal can help. When we cherish small moments, we begin to expect blessing from a heavenly father, who loves to give.
Conclusion
I hope you have enjoyed these 2 posts!
Across both posts, I’ve given 4 steps to dealing with change– let go of what has been and let God lead you, even if it is uncomfortable. Know that He calls your life significant, in every season. Then, watch for blessing, even in in the midst of your uncertainty.
If you follow these four steps through, you will begin to see change differently.
Change no longer looks dull and pointless, but meaningful and appropriate.
Wherever you find yourself, I am praying for you. I am praying that you don’t lose sight of God, in all of this. Don’t let a failed career or an unexpected situation tell you that you have no hope. Instead, tell the situation that hope is in you and resolve to let God show you the way through, whatever lies ahead.
He is with you.
